Combat Basics — Reap and Rush
Learn Reap and Rush combat: Yaoguai types, dodge timing, Soul pickups, element synergies, and wave survival for Steam Early Access.
Combat in Reap and Rush is readable chaos: swarms of Yaoguai, telegraphed elite attacks, and spell synergies that reward positioning. You are not memorizing frame data like a fighting game — you are routing movement, cooldowns, and element bonuses while the underworld assigns duties mid-run. This guide covers enemy tiers, defensive tools, Soul economy during fights, and how Fate Stones, Yin Spells, and Paper Crafts interact when bullets fill the screen.
Enemy tiers: trash, elite, and phase bosses
Trash Yaoguai die in few hits and exist to drop Souls and apply pressure. Elites carry visual auras — Metal-tinted armor, Wood thorns, etc. — hinting at resistances. Check the Items Reference for Fate Stones for element pierce options before chasing raw damage. Bosses lock arenas and add phase shifts; see How to Beat Bosses for tell-by-tell breakdowns. Early Access biomes rotate three boss pools; learn one deeply before generalizing.
Dodge, i-frames, and spacing
Your dodge grants brief invulnerability and a short burst of speed — default Space. Dodge into narrow gaps, not away from open edges where ranged Yaoguai spawn. After dodging, your aim snap-back is instant; use that window for a full primary spell volley. Fatigue matters: chained dodges without kills increase recovery time slightly — a subtle mechanic new players miss. Master spacing in the Controls Guide practice drill before tackling higher tiers.
Yin Spells: cooldown looping
Yin Spells are your active kit. Primary stays on mouse; secondaries on Q/R. Upgrade choices appear on level-up; prioritize cooldown reduction or projectile count before raw damage until tier two biomes. Spells inherit element tags from Fate Stones and envoy passives — a Water-tagged primary combos with Earth area upgrades differently than Fire spread. Deep dive in Yin Spell Builds and Yin Spell Tier List.
Paper Crafts in combat
Paper Crafts are one-shot or short-duration talismans — not spammable. Use them to break elite armor, cleanse debuffs, or freeze bosses during channel phases. They drop from duty rewards and shop chests; inventory caps at four. Burning a craft during trash waves is a common mistake — save for elite packs or phase transitions. Item stats live on Paper Crafts Items Page.
Five Elements during fights
Metal pierces, Wood spreads DoT, Water slows, Fire bursts, Earth controls space. Matching three pieces of one element triggers Resonance — a visible ring pulse and stat spike. Mixed-element builds work early; Resonance wins late. The Five Elements Build Guide maps every resonance breakpoint. Cross-reference Envoy Tier List for starters that bias an element without locking you out of pivots.
Soul pickups and risk/reward
Soul orbs drop from kills and duties. Picking them up fills your level bar for upgrade choices — missing orbs slows power curve more than taking chip damage. Magnet radius expands with certain Fate Stones and companion auras. During boss phases, orbs cluster at arena edges; dodge patterns often pull you away — intentional tension. Spend meta Souls only at the ledger between runs, not mid-combat.
Duties under fire
Some underworld duties spawn optional combat — escorting a misplaced god through a Yaoguai nest, for example. You can abandon duties, but you lose bonus Souls and achievement progress. Fox spirit cultivation duties sometimes pause waves briefly; use that breath to rearrange cooldowns. Full duty catalog: Underworld Duties Guide.
From survival to mastery
Once you clear a biome without panic dodging, study build craft: Builds Hub, Companion Tier List, and the Build Planner. Track combat achievements via Achievements Guide. Reap and Rush rewards calm aim over frantic clicking — rush the reaping, not your cooldown discipline.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common questions.
Why do I deal no damage to some elites?
They likely resist your current element. Swap via upgrades, Paper Crafts, or Fate Stones with pierce effects.
Is there friendly fire?
No. Area spells harm Yaoguai only. Companion effects also exclude the player.
What happens if I die during a duty?
The run ends like any death. Duty progress resets; partial Souls still bank to meta totals if you unlocked the ledger upgrade.
Does difficulty scale in co-op?
Early Access ships solo-first. Check patch notes on the Updates page if co-op arrives later.
